Each year, over 300 million plastic printer cartridges end up in US landfills. Unfortunately, the plastic used in manufacturing these cartridges isn't very recyclable (some of the components are made of engineering-grade polymers that are estimated to take more than 1,000 years to begin biodegrading.) Of the remaining plastics found in those discarded cartridges, most are mixed-resin and estimated to only have a 5-10 percent recycle rate.
Companies that build compatible cartridges re-use this plastic shell and certain components as their foundation to produce a new product. By doing this, over 40,000 TONS of plastics and scrap metals are kept out of the landfills each year.

Reducing the amount of discarded toner cartridges flowing into our landfills makes a dramatic impact, but you may be surprised to find out that using compatible cartridges makes a positive impact on our oil consumption as well. For each cartridge that is produced from raw materials, nearly one gallon of oil is used. Manufacturers building compatible cartridges produce several million cartridges from recycled sources every year, conserving those natural resources. And re-manufacturing a cartridge even reduces greenhouse gases thought to be contributing to climate change, according to the U.S Department of Energy.
Because of the increasing number of companies choosing compatible cartridges, each one that is purchased is slowing the flood of waste sent to the landfill, and every cartridge built with recycled materials is one less that needs to be produced from our limited natural resources.
